Jürgen Bürgin, berlinski fotograf i Anna-Sophie Jürgens, književni naučnik, istražuju upravo taj imaginarni aspekt.
Pored toga, njegovi radovi čine i vizuelni aspekt konferencije “Imagineers in Circus and Science”, u organizaciji Anna-Sophie Jürgens, čija su prva monografija “Poetics of the Circus, Winter Verlag” i naučni članak “Clownesque Circus Creatures – The Evolution of Clowns” takođe uključili njegove fotografije.

Circus. Photographs by Jürgen Bürgin. Texts by Anna-Sophie Jürgens

A wondrous world of dazzling illusions and crafty (dis)simulations, the authentic space of daring feats and extreme acts, a field of adventure and drama – all this and more is encapsulated within the sandy arena that lives – and dies – by suspense, contrast and contradiction, that we know as the circus. The circus’ polarising aesthetics manifest themselves in different media, in which they create their own imaginary. Together, Berlin photographer Jürgen Bürgin and literary scholar Anna-Sophie Jürgens explore these imaginariums. In 2016 Jürgen’s circus photographs have been exhibited as “Lichter der Manege” (Sparks of the Ring) in the library of Marburg University, Germany. This exhibition was part of the international interdisciplinary conference “Manegenkünste” (Arts of the Ring, 17–19 Dec) that was organised by Anna-Sophie Jürgens, Margarete Fuchs and Jörg Schuster.

Jürgen’s photographs will be published in the book Manegenkünste, a collection of 31 essays by international scholars from a variety of disciplines, which explores the cultural potential and interdisciplinary power of the circus as an aesthetic model. Jürgen’s photographs gave “Manegenkünste” its visual identity, featuring on all promotional material for the conference and in social media. They will also be providing a visual aspect to Anna-Sophie’s 2018 conference “Imagineers in Circus and Science”.

In 2016, Jürgen’s photographs were published with Anna-Sophie’s first monograph Poetik des Zirkus – Die Ästhetik des Hyperbolischen im Roman (Poetics of the Circus, Winter Verlag) and a scholarly article entitled “Clowneske Zirkuskunstfiguren – Zu Wandel und Werken des Zirkusclowns in der Literatur” (Clownesque Circus Creatures – The Evolution of Clowns), published in the edited collection Über den Clown by Richard Weihe (transcript).

Jürgen Bürgin is a photographer in Berlin, Germany, born in 1971. His work has been exhibited in Berlin, Potsdam, Sydney, New York, Bratislava, Potsdam, Cologne, Hamburg etc. His photographs have won several awards, including an award by the renowed Berlin based photography gallery C/O Berlin. He has been shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Award, as an Urban Photographer of the Year, and he took second place at the Brennpunkt Award of the Browse Fotofestival in Berlin. In 2016 Jürgen published his photo book URBAN FEVER – Scenes from City Life.

Anna-Sophie Jürgens is a Humboldt postdoctoral fellow at the Humanities Research Centre of the Australian National University (Canberra). Her work on circus in fiction and artistic research has been published internationally in books and papers. Anna-Sophie is especially interested in the affinities between circus and literary fiction which build upon narrative elements inherent in the arts of the ring, and have developed into a dispersed genre of inventing and fabricating – stories, things and beings.
